What Is a Nakshatra?
Nakshatras are 27 divisions of the ecliptic, commonly known as lunar mansions. Because they divide the zodiac much more finely than the 12 signs, they allow for a deeper understanding of personal qualities, even among individuals sharing the same Moon sign. In Vedic astrology, the Nakshatra occupied by the Moon at birth is treated as your birth star (Janma Nakshatra), used to analyze innate tendencies, marriage compatibility, and planetary timing.
Padas and Ruling Planets
Each Nakshatra is divided into four Padas (3°20' each), and interpretations vary depending on which Pada your Moon occupies. In addition, each of the 27 Nakshatras is assigned a ruling planet following a repeating sequence of nine planetary rulers: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mercury. This ruling planet serves as the starting point for the Vimshottari Dasha system.
Information Required for Calculation
The Moon transits through a single Nakshatra in about one day, and a Pada changes roughly every six hours. Therefore, while your birth date alone may be enough to identify the Nakshatra, an accurate birth time is necessary to calculate the exact Pada. If your birth time is unknown, the calculation is performed using 12:00 PM.
