Search for "free Vedic astrology" and the services you find differ a lot. Some only draw a chart, some stop at a short description of your sign, some explain things in full sentences. Here we lay out what a free reading that calculates automatically from your birth data can actually tell you.
What is calculated is the sky at the moment you were born
When you enter your date, time and place of birth, the positions of the planets as seen from that moment and that place are calculated. The birthplace is converted to latitude and longitude, and the time zone is corrected. This gives your Moon sign and Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Sun sign, ascendant (Lagna), the placement of each planet, and the boundaries of your Dasha periods. This part is astronomy, not an astrologer's opinion, so any service will produce the same values. The reading is those fixed positions put into words according to the classical interpretations.
What the free part covers
In most cases, the free part covers your nature as seen from the Moon sign and Nakshatra, how others perceive you as seen from the ascendant, and the general trend for today and the near term. What the free part does not cover
Questions of "when", such as the timing of marriage or a career change, require comparing the Dasha with the transits (the current movement of the planets), which takes more volume and more judgement. Digging into a specific area of life, such as suitable work, wealth or compatibility, means looking at house placements and divisional charts (D9, D10 and others). This goes beyond a free reading, and is normally handled in paid member content or in a full lifetime report.

If the birth time is inaccurate, the ascendant and houses shift and the premise of the reading changes, so confirm the time before you start.
